이 글은 1970년대와 80년대 아드리안 리치가 수행했던 레즈비언 여성주의 비평을 재검토하면서 그녀가 강조했던 “레즈비언 연속체”의 관념이 이성애자들과 동등성을 주장하는 레즈비언들의 배타적인 공동체 혹은 섹슈엘리티를 넘어선 여자들의 사랑과 우정의 공동체를 상정하는 것이 아니라 가부장적 체제에서 침묵되었던 보통 여자들의 역사를 상정한다는 점을 주장하고자 한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 리치가 레즈비언 여성시인이라는 이유로 세간의 주목을 받지 못했던 쥬디 그란의 시편들을 비평하는 가운데 그란의 비범한 시적 재능을 발견하고 그녀를 언어의 마법을 이해했던 여성시인들의 역사에 편입시키는 과정을 자세히 검토한다. 그럼으로써 이 글은 리치의 “레즈비언 연속체”가 결국은 그녀가 평생 지녔던 “공동 언어”에 대한 소망과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있으며 ‘통합된 전체’로서 역사의식의 근간이 되고 있다는 점을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to describe Adrienne Rich’s lesbian feminist criticism that she had pushed with primary intensity in the 1970s and 1980s. In particular, it takes note of her critique of Judy Grahn, a lesbian poet, in order to illuminate the fact that Rich’s notion of lesbian continuum should be understood as positing not an exclusive lesbian community but a history of common women who expressed their own ways of being in the patriarchal society by using the oppressor’s language. Thanks to her critique of Grahn, it could be better appreciated that her lesbian criticism is closely related to her dream of common language and her vision of a integrated whole.
