· Research topics: The research topic is a comparative study of Joseon’s moon jars and the Italian art movement of Arte Povera. It examines the aspects of artistic resistance and succession that transcend time and space as shown in these two artistic phenomena. · Research background: In recent years, there has been growing interest in Joseon’s moon jars, and the Arte Povera art movement has also been revisited. This study aims to explore the essence of artistic creation by analyzing the similarities and differences between these two art movements. · Differences from prior research: While most previous art studies have analyzed each phenomenon independently, this paper compares Arte Povera and moon jars socio-culturally, analyzing their artistic characteristics from a broader context of tradition and innovation, as well as resistance and succession. · Research method: This study employs a comparative aesthetic approach to analyze the commonalities and differences between the two art phenomena. The historical and social contexts in which each art form emerged were examined within their cultural-historical frameworks. Furthermore, representative works of Arte Povera artists and the aesthetic characteristics of Joseon’s moon jars were analyzed, supported by a review of literature addressing the relationship between tradition and modernity. · Research results: Arte Povera presented a new direction for contemporary art by utilizing natural materials and embracing spontaneity, while expressing critical attitudes toward capitalism and consumer culture. On the other hand, moon jars embody Confucian ideals and East Asian aesthetics through their imperfect beauty, demonstrating an acceptance of natural transformations during their production process.
