Abstract

· Research topics: This study aims to analyze the meanings of "death" and "dying" in L. Ulitskaya's novel The Funeral Party (Весёлые похороны) and to identify the central theme the author seeks to convey through the work. · Research background: There is currently a lack of studies that focus on developing Russian literature into applied or interdisciplinary fields. · Differences from prior research: While previous studies of Ulitskaya’s works have primarily concentrated on poetic analysis, this study approaches the novel from an interdisciplinary perspective, integrating poetic analysis with applied fields such as medical humanities. · Research method: This study analyzes the meanings of death and dying in the novel using Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's theories, alternative medicine theories, biblical motifs, and interviews with the author about her views on death. · Research results: Alick’s death is not depicted as an object of fear or silence, but as a tangible experience, symbolized by cherished memories and the sensory experience of present care. Through Alick’s dying process, the pain of exile and the grief of marginalized individuals dissipate. His funeral transforms into a joyful celebration of art, music, and the meaning of life, uniting the mourners into a harmonious family. Ulitskaya’s message that the time spent preparing for death can be a time of blessing resonates with Kübler-Ross’s research on the meaning of death and dying in the medical field. · Contribution points and expected effects: By exploring the meaning of death from an interdisciplinary perspective encompassing humanities, philosophy, and medicine, this study reveals that Ulitskaya's work serves as a literature of healing, shedding light on the meaning of human life.
