Abstract

This study set out to investigate the ways that Ipjae Jeong Jong-ro used spaces in his poems and wove the sensibility and composition methods of these spaces. Authors create literary works by moving from a space to another, which means that their space imagination is a main province of their literary inquiries. Jeong usually used the Sangju area around Woosan where he lived in his works, and the study mainly discussed it. Jeong's sensibility of spaces underwent a very colorful embodiment process with moral, romance, living, and social sensibility in action. Of these four types of sensibility, romance holds overwhelming presence in his works with social sensibility found rarely in them. It reflects his certain limitations with his problematic consciousness of reality. It is also one of the ways that he revealed his presence as Neo-Confucian scholar or author most actively. The study examined the sensibility and composition methods of spaces with a focus on spaces in his literature and found that the yin-yang theory and the Dotong theory had profound actions in it. In his works, literary spaces were woven with static and dynamic interlocking each other and with dots and lines mixing together with a focus on romance and living sensibility. It is an outcome of his special emphasis on literature as well as moral. The yin-yang theory meets literature and the Dotong theory meets moral in his works, which was possible because he had a uniform idea of moral and literature.
