In this article we turn to differentiated intertextual approach to the so-called “centone” poetics. Instances where Ivanov in his quasi-memoiristic prose quotes “Blokian” text (allusions, reminiscences, paraphrases, parody and travesty) allow to discover there the “presence” of symbolism. It appears that dominant semantics is delivered not so much through direct quotations, but rather by the way of coded allusion, motives, modes of discourse. Against the background of the traditional devices of symbolist poetics rethought as clichés Ivanov creates travesty of symbolist myth and biography, engages in specific re-coding of “high” modernism within his personal situation of existential despair.
