Abstract
This study examines the designation of Pagyesa in Daegu as a Wondang and the mechanisms through which it was protected during the late Joseon period. In 1696, Pagyesa was first designated as a wondang dedicated to praying for King Yeongjo’s longevity. With this designation, the temple received royal patronage, including the construction of the Chilseong Hall, the production of Buddhist paintings, and the granting of temple lands. In 1712, when Yeongjo served as a senior official of the Jongchinbu, Pagyesa was incorporated as a subordinate temple of the bureau; at the same time, an official wanmun was issued, granting exemptions from various types of temple labor and corvée duties. After Yeongjo ascended the throne, Pagyesa was transferred under the jurisdiction of Eoeuigung Palace, and its function as a wondang expanded to include prayers for not only Yeongjo but also his mother Sukbin and Queen Jeongseong. Consequently, two wanmun documents were issued in 1732 and 1763, further strengthening protective measures for the temple. In 1843, the Yejo issued a jeolmok, establishing regulations for appointing a seungtong (chief monk) at Pagyesa. Through this system, the temple acquired the authority to supervise monks and temples within its jurisdiction, thereby enhancing its institutional standing. Based on its initial designation as a royal wondang in the late seventeenth century, Pagyesa continued to receive state protection and maintained its status as a royal temple through the end of the nineteenth century.
