이 논문은 마르크스주의와 포스트식민주의의 관계를 외재적인 대립관계로 놓는태도를 문제적인 것으로 비판하고, 마르크스주의의 역사와 분리될 수 없는 포스트식민 이론의 양상에 주목하여 마르크스주의와 포스트식민주의 사이의 생산적인 긴장 관계를 주시하자는 입장을 따른다. 이 입장에 따라 본 논문은 사미르 아민(Samir Amin)과 공명하는 가야트리 스피박(Gayatri Spivak)을 경유해, 마르크스주의의 역사라는 맥락에서 포스트식민주의를 ‘트리컨티넨탈리즘’으로 재정의하는 로버트 영(Robert Young)의 기획을 살펴보며, ‘트리컨티넨탈리즘’의 유효성을 『제인 에어』라는 19세기 중반 영국 소설을 계급 - 인종 - 젠더의 역학으로 읽음으로써 입증한다. 19세기에 부상하는 백인여성의 주체 형성 과정에는 젠더만이 아니라 계급과 인종문제가 처음부터 함께 얽혀 있었으며, 자메이카 - 마데이라 - 인도라는 라틴아메리카- 아프리카 - 아시아 대륙의 지점들도 영국 식민주의에 의해 연계되어 있었다. 트리컨티넨탈리즘으로 그러한 얽힘과 연계를 읽어낸 것은 제국의 주체와 삶을 내부에서부터 해체하는 요인으로서 영국적인 것의 허세를 생생하게 드러내는 한편, 그동안부당하게 매도되어왔던 식민지인의 경험과 문화에서 오히려 새로운 탈식민 행위자성을 파악할 수 있는 가능성을 열어준다.
Abstract
Criticizing the attitude of understanding the relations of Marxism and Post-colonialism as merely external and oppositional, this paper proposes the position of highlighting the productive tensions between them. Following this lead, the paper examines the aspects of postcolonial theories inseparable from the history of Marxism via Spivak’s discussions which resonate with Samir Amin. Then, it probes into Robert Young’s project of redefining Postcolonialism as tricontinentalism in the context of the history of Marxism. Based upon these theoretical discussions, the paper has tried to demonstrate the conceptual validity of tricontinentalism by rereading Jane Eyre through the class-race-gender dynamics. The rereading of the novel through tricontinentalism has shown that not only is the problematic of gender closely interlocked with those of class and race but also the regions of Latin America,Africa, and Asia such as Jamaica, Madeira, and India are interconnected by the 19th British colonialism. Such a tricontinental reading finally has disclosed the pretense of the British as the key of dismantling the imperial subjects from within. Thus, the possibility of making visible the new decolonial agencies from the tricontinental experiences and cultures denigrated for so long time will be opened.
