Abstract

The Center for Mt, Jiri Region Cultural Studies has carried out comprehnesive research about the culture of the Mt. Jiri region for 10 years since 2007 September. The purpose of this paper is to review the achievement of the studies on modern Korean history and to seek direction of the next task. Donghak Peasant Revolution has been studied intensively in the era of the 19th century for recent 10 years. These articles explained the whole story of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in the Mt. Jiri region, the regional expansion of the revolution, the reaction of the local society against the revolution, and the missionary work of Donghak in Namwon and organizing believers of Donghak. One of the those studies illuminated that Mt. Jiri received attention as the base of the Righteous Armies with research on the strategy of Go Gwangsoon, a leader of the Righteous Army's struggle in the last period of Joseon. In addition, a few articles were written about research history of Hwang Hyeon, an intellectual of the Mt. Jiri region, and foundation of modern schools in the Mt. Jiri area. Studies of history after 1945 have been centered on Yosun incident and partisan activities. With these studies, political conflict between the R.O.K government and the congress, measure to handle the incident and the 14th regiment's entering into Mt. Jiri were researched. Also, studies investigated whole story of partisan movement organized in the Mt. Jiri region and the situation of the areas affected by the partisan activities. I'd like to check the exposed limit with the above review and present outlook for the future. Firstly, researched period was focused excessively on the several years after the liberation in 1945. The studies should extend the period of research into the era of Japanese colonial rule, 3 years after the liberation, postwar times of the Korean war and industrialization times, and invigorate the research about them. Secondly, we should enlarge the local space for research. It is most important thing to decide appropriate scope for research area according to these days' standard, beyond defining the Mt. Jiri region as the area adjacent to Mt. Jiri. Thirdly, movement history was intensively studied as the subject of the research. Few of the socioeconomic changes and the cultural transformation caused by those changes in the Mt. Jiri region was investigated. Therefore, we should seek the complicated and multi-layered social changes or culture ahead to understand the Mt. Jiri region's identity and its various value. Also, we need to study history of daily life because it is significant to represent isolated or excluded experience and practice of natives. Finally, it is necessary to organize, analyze and publish basic materials more actively. The basic materials lying scattered in local area should be compiled and arranged ahead to activate and systemize local history.
