지리산권 유학 연구의 성과와 향후 과제

지리산권의 유학에 관한 연구를 수행할 수 있는 근본 전제는 명산이 사람에게 일정한 향을 끼칠 수 있으며, 그 향이 학문과 사상을 통해 구체화되어 나타날 수 있다는 데에 있다. 이 글은 이와 같은 전제를 단서로 삼아 지난 9년 동안 수행한 지리산권 유학 연구의 성과가 가지는 의의와 한계를 짚어본 후, 앞으로 새롭게 진척시켜야 할 과제들은 무엇이 있는지를 조망하는 데에 목적이 있다. 지리산권문화연구단이 산출한 유학 관련 연구 성과는 두 가지 유형으로 구분할 수 있다. 주로 1단계 토대연구에서 자료의 수집과 정리를 수행하면서 만들어진 자료집과 이것을 바탕으로 단계별로 연구를 진행하면서 제출한 논문이다. 지리산권 유학에 관한 자료집은 총 7책이 발간되었다. 출간 시기는 1단계 6책과 2단 계 1책으로, 거의 대부분 1단계에서 작업이 이루어졌다. 관련 내용을 주제별로 분류하면 수양론 4책, 서원 2책, 인물 1책이다. 지리산권 유학이 가지는 특질을 해명하기 위해 시도한 연구 성과로서 13편의 논문이 있다. 주제에 따라 인물 1편, 가문 2편, 경세론 1편, 성리학 1편, 수양론 5편, 서원 2편, 山誌 1편, 儒佛交涉(性理學) 1편 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 지난 9년 동안 수행한 지리산권 유학 연구의 성과에 대해 살펴본다면, 크게 세 가지 측면에서 그 의의를 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 지리산이라는 명산을 중심으로 유학자와 학문 사상을 유기적으로 연관하여 고찰했다는 점이다. 둘째, 장기간의 연구 계획이 가능하여 토대연구-중점연구-심화연구라는 체계적 연구 과정으로 진행할 수 있었다. 셋째, 지리 산권이라는 지역 설정을 통해 남과 호남의 학자들이 서로 교유하고 학문이 상호 통섭 한 양상에 주목할 수 있었다.
Abstract
The fundamental premise of research on Confucianism(儒學) in the Jiri Mountain region lies in that famous mountains can influence people to a certain extent. The influence can be materialized through their studies and philosophy. Based on this premise, the study first examines the meaning and limitation of research on Confucianism in the Jiri Mountain region. It takes a view of new tasks to be advanced in the future. Results of research related to Confucianism obtained by the Jirisan Region Cultural Studies team can be divided into two types: 1. collections of materials compiled through collections and summaries based on the first-stage of foundation research, 2. submitted academic theses while they conduct step-by-step research. A total of 7 books on Confucianism in the Jiri Mountain region have been published. As for the time of publication, 6 books were published in the first stage and 1 book in the second stage. Most works were done in the first stage. Their contents are classified as 4 books on Self-cultivation Theory (修養論), 2 books on the Confucian college(書院), and 1 book on people (人物). There are 13 theses as research results. These explain the characteristics of Confucianism in the Jiri Mountain region. They are classified by subject as 1 piece on people, 2 on eminent family(家門), 1 on Governing Theory (經世論), 1 on Neo-Confucianism(性理學), 5 on Self-cultivation Theory, 2 on the Confucian college, 1 on mountains(山誌), and 1 on Confucianism- Buddhism Interactions(儒佛交涉). To examine the results of research on Confucianism in the Jiri Mountain region (conducted over the past nine years), the meaning can be summarized into three aspects. First, research on Confucian scholars, their studies and philosophy was organically conducted surrounding Jiri Mountain. Second, a long-term research plan was possible and systematic research in the order of foundation, core and in-depth research could be conducted. Third, though the pre-set region is the Jiri Mountain region, scholars in Gyeongsang (Yeongnam region) and Jeolla (Honam region) Provinces were able to exchange and observe conditions of mutual convergence in their studies.
