Abstract

This thesis aims to examine the unworldliness in the poetry of Chem-mo-dang. Chem-mo-dang was very fond of poetry, and he wrote poems extemporaneously when he was excited by Mother Nature. His poems were mostly from his experience of life; especially, he wrote about the agony of life and expressed the mind to escape from the vulgar world to Nature. One of the most significant features of Chem-mo-dang’s poetry is that most of the subjects of the poems, which has four different messages, are about running away from vulgarity. First, he tried to shun the dust of the worldliness. Chem-mo-dang wanted to escape from the noise and crowd to dwell in mountains. His preference towards nature is not that he had any memories but that he hoped to leave the human society. Second, he suffered from the disease of loving Nature. He loved Nature so much that he traveled all around the country to seek fine sceneries. Therefore, traveling became a disease that he could not confine whether he wanted it or not. Third, he pretended to be crazy with his poems and alcohol. Even though he left secular society for Nature, he could not console his deep sorrow. To console it, he drank a lot, but he never made any mistake out of drinking. Fourth, he said that there was a Taoist hermit’s world in the secular world. Chem-mo-dang wrote a lot about the Taoist hermit’s world, most of which is located in the magnificent landscapes. He recognized that where he himself stays is the Taoist hermit’s world. These four points are the ideas that are in the core of Chem- mo-dang’s poetry and show specific aspects of the unworldliness of his poetry.
