이 논문은 경기순환에 따른 초국적기업의 경제성과의 동태 변화를 다룬다. 초국적기업은 전 세계 이윤을 추구하려 글로벌 네트워크를 구축하고 활동한다. 그런데, 초국적기업의 경제성과와 글로벌 네트워크의 변화는 전 세계와 해당 나라의 경기순환에 영향을 받는다. 이 논문은 1980년대 이후 경기순환과 미국 초국적기업의 글로벌 네트워크에 초점을 맞춰, 이들 관계를 분석한다. 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미국 초국적기업의 경제성과는 전 세계 경기순환과는 인과성을 갖는다. 특히, 2000년대 이후 나라들의 경기순환이 동조화하며, 미국 초국적기업의 경제성과도 이 영향에서 벗어날 수 없었다. 둘째, 특정 나라의 경기순환은 미국 초국적기업의 경제성과에 큰 영향을 주지 못했다. 초국적기업의 글로벌 네트워크가 여러 나라로 흩어져 있어, 한 나라의 경기 하락을 다른 나라들이 상쇄할 수 있기 때문이다. 셋째, 경기순환에 따라 미국 초국적기업의 글로벌 네트워크에서는 생산지, 본국, 다른 나라의 판매액에 변화가 일어났다. 마지막으로, 경기순환은 단기에 지리적 불균등에 영향을 못 주지만, 미국 초국적기업은 장기에 이윤을 좇아 다른 나라로 이동한다.
Abstract
This paper deals with the change in the dynamics of economic performances of transnational corporations (TNCs) according to business cycles. TNCs build and operate global networks to pursue global profits. However, economic performances of TNCs and changes in global networks are affected by global and national business cycles. This paper analyzes these relationships, focusing on U.S. TNCs since the 1980s. The empirical analysis results are as follows. First, economic performances of U.S. TNCs has a causual relationship with global business cycles. In particular, as national business cycles have been synchronized since the 2000s, economic performances of US TNCs has not escaped from these influences. Second, business cycles of a specific country did not significantly affect economic performances of U.S. TNCs. This is because global networks of TNCs is scattered across many countries, so that economic downturn in one country can be offset by other countries. Third, according to business cycles, changes occurred in global networks of U.S. TNCs. Finally, although business cycles does not significantly impact geographic uneveness in the short run, but U.S. TNCs move to other countries in pursuit of profits in the long run.
