식민지 시대의 사회주의 운동, 살릴 만한 가치란 무엇인가?

공산주의 운동이 발동되고, 발전되고, 스탈린주의라는 형태로 보수화돼 결국 하강 곡선을 밟게 된 20세기는 이미 지났다. 소련 등을 세계자본주의 체제로 흡수시킨신자유주의 세계화 시대마저도 이미 그 종언을 고하고 있다. 공산주의 운동의 시대가 ‘어제’도 아닌 ‘그제’가 된 현재에 와서는, 우리가 여전히 중시해야 할 그 시대의살릴 만한 ‘가치’란 무엇인가? 나는 내 저서 The Red Decades: Communism as Movement and Culture in Korea, 1919-1945에서 이 가치들을 ‘대안적 근대성’ 이라는 방식으로 정리했다. 실제 운동이 집권해서 이 가치들을 전부 다 실현하지 못하는 한이 있더라도 적어도 이론적으로는 조선을 포함한 1920~30년대의 세계적공산주의 운동은 국경을 넘는 혁명적 보편성을 추구하면서 반식민지적 투쟁 차원에서 특히 피(被)억압 민족들의 경우 민족 문화에 대한 진보적 재해석을 시도했다. ‘대안적 근대성’은 이외에는 급진적 재분배와 과거 사회적 하위자들의 신분 상승의 가능성, 노동에의 가치 부여, 남녀평등과 탈(脫)권위주의적 교육 등을 포함했다. 이 이상(理想)들 중에서는 차후 북한에서는 사회적 하위자들의 신분 상승이나 재분배(사회적 임금의 최대화) 등의 실현을 실제로 어느 정도 시도했다. 단, 냉전과 분단, 남북한의 경쟁적인 산업화 ‘속도전’ 과정에서는 북한에서는 ‘대안적 근대성’ 이상들의 실현이 최소화되는 한편 남한에서는 사회민주주의적 정치 운동이라도 제대로 발전될 수 있는 토양마저도 구축되지 못했다.
Abstract
The twentieth century, which witnessed the Communist movement being born, developing, then turning into conservative Stalinist nation building and following a downward curve ever since then, has long passed. Even the era of neoliberal globalization, which absorbed the wreckage of Soviet Union and other ‘really existing socialist states’ into the global capitalist system, is already almost over. What are the values of this movement that we should still treasure presently, when its epoch has long ended? I summarized these values in my book The Red Decades: Communism as Movement and Culture in Korea, 1919-1945 as ‘alternative modernity’. Even if Communists could never realize all these values when in power, at least theoretically, the global communist movement of the 1920s and 1930s, including colonized Korea, favoured transborder revolutionary universality and attempted progressive reinterpretation of national cultures, in anti-colonial terms in the case of colonial societies. ‘Alternative modernity’ also included radical redistribution, the possibility of raising the status of these formerly underprivileged, glorification of labour, gender equality and non-authoritarian education. When it comes to the ideals of ‘alternative modernity,’ North Korea did in reality later provided opportunities for social advancement to the former workers and peasants and attempted social redistribution (maximization of social wages). However, in the process of Cold War-era national division and competitive industrialization of the two highly militarized Korean states, the realization of ‘alternative modernity’ ideals was minimized in North Korea, while even social democratic politics never managed to properly take roots in South Korea.
