Abstract
This paper analyzes the space embodied in the Tang’s Monodies to examine how poets effectively express their thoughts and feelings in a literary manner. In order to conduct in-depth research on the subject, this paper introduces key concepts such as ‘separation and fusion’, and also ‘forgetting and remembering’, which are based on Tang people’s view of life and death. There are two patterns for the fusion of two spaces that take place in the monodies, First, the space for mourning located in this world is temporarily transformed into the state resembling the otherworld due to authors’ emotions. Second, this world and the underworld are combined as the author meets the dead by experiencing astral projection while dreaming. By recognizing reality, the two spaces are again isolated. As for oblivion, it refers to living people’s forgetting the former residence or the tomb belonging to the dead. It also refers to the dead’s forgetting this life after departing for their afterlife. In comparison, the living people still remember the dead’ achievement, reputation and their writings, and they still miss and mourn for the dead. Based on this perception, this paper explores the device that allows readers to aesthetically accept monodies through a detailed analysis of the images depicted in those poems. On top of this, the answers to the following questions, why underworld are often negatively described in monodies, why the standardized schema is strictly observed by poets when composing monodies, and how monodies function as writings for the living instead of the dead, are also concluded.
