Abstract
Myeonou Gwak Jong-seok (1846-1919) left behind over 2,000 Chinese poems, among which his landscape poetry (山水詩) has been identified as inheriting the tradition of Neo-Confucian poetry (道學詩) and following the same trajectory as Toegye and Nammyeong, who were influenced by Zhu Xi. However, research on Myeonou's Chinese poetry requires multifaceted and detailed examination of the aesthetic qualities and literary beauty according to each poetic form. This study aims to investigate the broad spectrum of Myeonou's Chinese poetry by focusing on his works with playful composition tendencies that take trivial everyday materials as subjects for entertainment, examining the diversity, expressive beauty, and aesthetic characteristics of his poetic works. Accordingly, this study analyzed Myeonou's playful poems, medicine-name poems (藥名體詩), and bird-sound poems (禽言體詩), which were created through his positive recognition of humorous materials in Chinese poetry composition. Through Chinese poems that calmly and humorously depicted mundane, humble objects from daily life, we could observe Myeonou's erudite authorial aspects. In particular, the medicine-name poems can be evaluated as friendship poetry that utilized medicinal herb names with themes of solidarity and mutual comfort among friends and literary figures, while delicately revealing the author's circumstances and feelings through skillful expression, and as works containing critical consciousness toward reality. Meanwhile, Myeonou's bird-sound poems, utilizing bird calls, revealed his interest in the impoverished lives of common people in mountainous regions, his consciousness of responding to reality, and his patriotic sentiments. Myeonou's tendency toward playful composition and his miscellaneous-style poetry can be said to have been created to discover the principles (理致) of each object and, even in bleak reality, overcome the spiritual suffering of melancholy and resentment (憂愁怨恨), serving as a mature spiritual orientation toward self-discipline and adaptation to the world. Furthermore, through Myeonou's miscellaneous-style poetry, we can discover his outstanding poetic talent (詩才) in utilizing various forms comprehensively as a poet and his erudite scholarly aspects, as well as observe his lively and dynamic variation of materials based on humor and play, revealing his creative and experimental poetic character.
