This paper aimed to show the process of the formation of an image of “mother” in the Korean society by revealing the gap between maternal discourse and the reality after the Korean War. In the current study’s perspective, an image of 'Korean mothers' did not originate from the “Korean tradition” nor from the invention of tradition during 1960s and 70s, but from the contradictory reality of motherhood that was created after the Korean War. Due to the filthy conditions of being a mother,many women faced abortion, infanticide, abandonment, and denial of motherhood. Likewise, taking care of the family became an important issue during the dismantling of families and the society aimed to cope with the crisis by emphasizing motherhood. This contradictory reality led to even more sacrificing and selfless motherhood, and during the process motherhood has become a traditional image. In conclusion, an image of “Korean mother” is a result of a contradictory combination of an attempt to control a relaxed social system and an unstable and deviating motherhood reality.
