Abstract
This study was conducted to confirm the reducing effects of FeverNil PowderTM (Han Poong Co., Ltd., Korea) on the reduction of stress caused by administration of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine, which mostly contains oil-based adjuvants that may cause side effects in pigs. FeverNilTM, which is composed of acetaminophen, vitamin C, and anhydrous citric acid, has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Thirty crossbred Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc (LYD) pigs, 8–9 weeks old, were divided into three groups: control, FMD vaccine (T1), and FMD vaccine+FeverNilTM (oral administration of 0.2% FeverNilTM 5 days after vaccination, T2). We compared changes in body weight (BW), hematology, blood chemistry, serum FMD antibody levels, and stress indicators for 14 days between the test groups. Total BW gain was significantly higher in the T2 group (13.76±1.73 kg) than in the T1 group (11.13±1.33 kg). The results of hematology and blood chemistry analysis did not differ significantly between these two groups. There was a higher rise of FMD antibody titers in the T2 group (91.9±5.6) than in the T1 group (89.1±7.9); however, the difference was not statistically significant. The levels of stress indicators, such as cortisol, TNF-α, and C-reactive protein were significantly lower in the T2 group (310.31±44.11 ng/mL, 59.05±11.88 pg/mL, 29.05±2.84 ng/mL) than in the T1 group (361.58±58.74 ng/mL, 74.47±19.26 pg/mL, 34.21±5.34 ng/mL), 3–5 days after FMD vaccination. On the 14th day, the gross and histopathological analyses showed that inflammatory reaction at the injection site was less in the T2 group than in the T1 group. In conclusion, it is considered that 0.2% oral administration of FeverNilTM after vaccination is effective in reducing the side effects (fever, anorexia, inflammation, etc.) associated with foot-and-mouth disease vaccination in pigs.
