Abstract

Since the late 20th century, the ubiquity of the Internet has allowed for the real-time collection, sharing, and discussion of information, and young people’s understanding of social issues is greatly influenced by the Internet’s real-time nature, anonymity, and diversity of information available on the Internet. However, young people’s understanding of social issues is not only influenced by the collection and interpretation of information through the Internet, but also by differences in individual subjective perceptions. This is because individuals selectively access, interpret, and remember information based on their pre-formed subjective perceptions. These memories can exist independently of the information initially received and are not easily changed once formed. Previous studies on the impact of internet use on social cognition are mainly based on theoretical or discursive sources, but it is possible that individuals’ social cognition may change with the increase of internet use. This study utilizes data from the China Family Panel Study (CFPS), a national survey in China, to explore how young adults’ perceptions of social issues are shaped and changed by various sources of information on the Internet. Young adults aged 16 to 34 were selected as the subjects of the study, and social issues were mainly discussed in two aspects: welfare issues and economic development issues. The fixed effects model was used as the research methodology for this study. The results of the study showed that the frequency of internet use did not affect the youth’s understanding of the seriousness of social problems. However, the more important they considered the internet to be in obtaining information than other media, the more serious they considered social problems to be. The higher the socioeconomic status of the individual, the less serious they considered social problems to be.
