Abstract
This paper analyzes the popular biopolitical discourse on social egg freezing technology which operates in the political economy of hope. Egg freezing technology is emerging as a technology of hope that involves individualized risk management and responsibility and the formation of a subjectivity centered on hope, prediction, expectation, and investment for the future. Social egg freezing is a site where concepts such as biology, aging, motherhood, family, and gender are contested and reshaped, focusing on the subject that evaluates and manages one's fertility. As egg freezing technology is perceived as a risk management strategy for uncertainties in the future, women who freeze eggs are sometimes represented as liberated subjects preparing for the future. Yet, they are also rendered selfish individuals who put their needs in front of more important things. The previous norms of motherhood and family are reinforced, emphasizing hopes for an ideal heterosexual family and healthy genetic children. The normativeness of being a subject preparing for future reproduction amidst the risks, limitations, and uncertainties of the future produces individualized and gendered responsibility. However, egg freezing technology potentially challenges the concepts of natural childbirth, family, and blood ties. It is necessary to pay more attention to the practices that question the existing family norms and the social problems that make it hard to raise children.
