Abstract

This study analyzes the Netflix's Korean culinary competition show ‘Culinary Class Wars’ to explore how popular culture contributes to reproducing sexist narratives. Released in late 2024, the program achieved considerable popularity not only in Korea but also internationally, with several participants subsequently becoming star chefs and gaining prominence in mass media. Although the program drew attention for emphasizing fairness beyond class distinctions, the stark gender imbalance among participants—with a ratio of 82% male to 18% female—highlights underlying gender issues. Starting from this gender imbalance, this study examines how the program reinforces longstanding gender inequalities within the culinary industry. The analysis reveals a pattern in which female chefs are marginalized or assigned secondary roles, female leadership is undervalued, male chefs’ expertise and authority are emphasized, and female chefs are depicted according to gender stereotypes. Through these portrayals, mass media continuously reproduce and reinforce structural gender inequalities in the culinary industry. Mass media, as a public institution, should play a role in encouraging women to actively engage in social roles. It is essential to highlight the presence of female professionals, including female chefs, to dismantle gender stereotypes and foster a more equitable occupational environment.
