Abstract
Block diagonalization (BD) is a suboptimal precoding technique for multi-user multiple-input/multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, which provides the perfect elimination of inter-user interferences. For the constraint to eliminate inter-user interference, the number of simultaneously supportable users is limited. In a downlink MU-MIMO system with large number of users, a user set supported by a base station must be selected to maximize the total throughput. The optimal user selection algorithm, which requires exhaustive search, is prohibitive in real application due to its high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an individual rate-based user selection algorithm. The proposed algorithm considers individual rate rather than system capacity so that it does not require finding the precoding matrices for all the users, which greatly reduces complexity. Furthermore, the selection metric is individual rate so that the proposed scheme can be easily combined with scheduling such as proportional fair (PF) for system efficiency. Simulation results and computational complexity analysis show that the proposed algorithm can achieve almost the same performance in terms of the sum rate performance as conventional algorithms, and with reduced complexity.
