Abstract
Sharing information on virus sample among anti-virus firms would lead to quality improvement of anti-virus softwares since it would increase the curable viruses. But it is not clear whether the sharing would benefit consumers and firms altogether, making them to agree on voluntary participation on information sharing scheme. This paper analyzes the issue using a vertical differentiation model, where high- and low-quality anti-virus firms exist. The results are as follows. First, when only one of the quality in high- and low-quality softwares is increase due to sharing, either consumer base is reduced or firm profit is decreased. Second, the conditions for voluntary participation on information sharing is rather restrictive, that is, the magnitude of quality increase of high-quality software should be more than that of low-quality software and the proportion of quality increase of high-quality software should be lower than that of low-quality software. Third, when quality difference is larger, there is more possibility for voluntary participation on information sharing.
