Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel Near-Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system. Conventional Single-Input Sing-Output (SISO) NFMI communication systems transfer data by inductive coupling between a transmitter and a receiver. When we arrange same type loop antennas to realize a MIMO system, however, crosstalk may occur among the array antenna components either in a transmitter or receiver side due to the inductive coupling, where the coupling is usually stronger than that between the transmitter and the receiver due to a short distance between the antenna array components either in the transmitter and receiver. To mitigate the performance degradation due to the crosstalk, we propose a heterogeneous multi-pole loop antenna array which can cancel the crosstalk without coupling, where the cancellation is verified by simulations and experiments. Furthermore, we confirm the channel capacity enhancement of the scheme can be used in various applications supporting simultaneous power and data transfer as well as high data rate communications.
