Abstract
We present multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies when transmitters and receivers utilize multiple antennas. The key idea of the MIMO technologies is that we can obtain high channel capacity without increasing bandwidth and transmit power. In this paper, we describe the theoretical channel capacity of the MIMO systems and review many MIMO technologies that can be exploited in wireless communication systems. The multiple antenna schemes can be categorized into diversity and multiplexing methods, and their combinations: The diversity methods improve the communication reliability by an amount of the multiplication of the number of transmitter and receiver antennas, and the multiplexing schemes enable multiple channel transmission in spatial domain, and finally, the combined methods utilize advantages of both diversity and multiplexing techniques. In addition, we discuss the future MIMO technologies.
