Abstract

Despite the steady growth of women's enrollment in higher education, it has been reported that the employment rate for college-educated women in Korea is persistently low. This article explores the ways college-educated women define their social roles with regard to employment and discusses the implications for women's education policy. A total of five, three employed and two nonemployed, women who entered fouryear universities in the mid1980s are selected for indepth interviews. Both employed and nonemployed women suffered between the ideal of "working women" featured as a "norm" in the changing society and the structural constraints that actually hinder their advancement in their career or pursuits of career in reality. Employed women are ambiguously positioned between their career and their role as a mother, while nonemployed women are placed under the immense societal pressure to become "competent mothers," which suggest that the unusually low employment rate of collegeeducated women in Korea may have some correlation with the unusual zeal for education among the middleclass parents. Employed and nonemployed women compete as "mothers" of the school children, and this competition may eventually contribute to the reinforcement of the traditional patriarchal norms. The ambiguity of women's social identity is a product of a complex interaction between the constraints of the structure and the cultural constructions on the part of educated women. In conclusion, this study suggests that a substantial policy to enhance the employment of collegeeducated women should take place in addition to an enforcement of a viable gender equity program, to interrupt the vicious circle of unemployment supported by the reinforcement of patriarchal norms.
