7.20 교육여건개선사업 중 학급규모축소는 투자규모가 가장 큰 사업이었다. 이 사업의 명시된 목표의 하나가 학급규모축소를 통하여 수업에서 수준별 학습 또는 토론 등 다양한 교수학습 방법을 활성화하는 것이었다. 본 연구는 학급규모가 교사들의 수업태도와 교수학습 방법의 활용에 미친 영향을 분석함으로써 7.20 여건개선사업의 기본전제의 타당성을 검토하였다. 전국의 고등학생들을 대상으로 한 설문자료에 기초하여 학생들이 관측한 교사의 수업태도와 교수학습방법이 학급규모별로 어떻게 차이가 나는가를 살펴보았다. 개인적 배경변인과 학교변인들을 통제했을 때 학급규모는 교사들의 수업태도와 교수학습방법의 다양화에 유의한 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 일반적으로 소규모 학급에서 교사들이 수업에 임하는 태도는 보다 진지하며 학생들의 학습요구에 보다 민감하게 반응할 뿐 아니라 다양한 교수학습방법을 보다 많이 활용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 긍정적 상호관계는 과목별로 또 계열과 지역규모별로 크게 달랐다. 이러한 효과는 사회나 언어영역보다 수학과 과학과목에서, 실업계 고등학교보다 일반계 고등학교에서, 그리고 읍면이나 중소도시보다 대도시에서 주로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study analyzes and assesses one important assumption of the '7.20 educational condition improvement initiative'. The main project of the initiative is to reduce the class size to 35 per a regular classroom by the spring 2002 for high schools and by the spring 2004 for primary and middle schools. 7.20 initiative assumes that smaller class sizes can stimulate teachers' positive attitudes toward students, and help more diverse teachinglearning methods be used in classes. In this study, to see if the class size reduction project is effective in real learning and teaching, we investigate the effects of small class on teachers' attitudes toward students, and teachinglearning methods used in classes. We analyze such effects according to around 12,000 high school students' observation by utilizing the multiple regression analyses. The results indicate that in smaller classes, teachers respond to students' questions more sincerely, and explain in more detail and tend to explain the principles of the educational contents rather than and to force students to memorize learning materials. The results also indicate that teachers in smaller classes apply various teachinglearning methods such as, group discussion, experiment, writing and presenting papers, and so on, rather than just give strict lectures. However, the effects are different across subjects, regions, and tracks.
