본 연구는 고교에서 이루어지는 수업을 통해 평준화 정책을 살펴보려고 한다. 이를 위해 평준화고/비평준화고의 수업을 참여관찰하고, 교사, 학생에 대한 면담을 하였다. 먼저, 두 학교의 일반 수업을 보면, 설명식 수업이 이루어지는 맥락은 교사들이 진도를 나가는 데 효율적이며, 수업 준비에 편하다고 여기기 때문이다. 또한 교사들은 일반수업에서 학생 개인차를 반영하여 수업을 하기보다 중간 수준의 학생에게 맞춰 일제 수업을 한다. 수준별 이동수업에서 두 학교 교사들은 능력별 반에 따라 다르게 가르친다고 생각한다. 그러나 학생들은 상반과 중반 수업이 내용이나 수준에 있어 큰 차가 없다고 받아들이며, “기껏해야 단어 한두 개 더 해주는 정도”로 생각한다. 수업관찰을 토대로 볼 때, 평준화고/비평준화고 모두 수업방식이나 학생의 개인차 반영에서 차이가 거의 없으며, 수업의 모습과 양상이 유사하다. 이는 두 학교 교사가 중간 수준의 학생들을 대상으로 입시에 나올 정도의 수준으로 수업을 진행하는 데서 비롯한다.
Abstract
A qualitative analysis on the lessons of leveled/un-leveled high schools and the leveling policyLee, Hyesook(Korea National Open University)This study aims to considerate the leveling policy on the basis of the qualitative analysis on school lessons. For this purpose, I observed the lessons of a leveled and an un-leveled high school and interviewed students and teachers of the schools. The lessons of the ordinary classes in the two schools are mainly carried out by explanation. Teachers regard explanation as an efficient and easy method. Also, teachers don’t considerate students' abilities. Giving lessons, they tune the level of the lessons to those of the average students. In the ability classes, teachers of the two schools think that they teach students differently according to the abilities of the students. But students believe that high level class and low level class have no difference in their content and level. Considering teaching method of their lessons reveals no difference in the two school. Regardless of homogeneity and heterogeneity of students' abilities, the lessons of the two schools are not different from each other, because the lessons of both the schools focus on the level of average students. In addition, teachers consider the level of the entrance examination most in all the lessons. As a result, I reach a conclusion that the purpose of the lessons is not students' excellence but the success in the entrance examination, whether the school is leveled or un-leveled.
