주변 사람의 죽음이 대인조력 전공분야 대학생에게 미치는 영향

초록

인간은 누구나 죽는다는 죽음에 관한 기본적 명제에도 불구하고 인간은 죽음에 대한 직면을 최대한 회피하고 죽음의 중요성에도 불구하고 삶과 분리하고 회피하는 경향이 큰 것으로 보인다. 죽음에 대한 불안 혹은 공포 경향은 발달단계별로 차이를 보인다. 성인기 전체 발달단계에서 성인초기에 죽음에 대한 불안과 공포가 가장 크다는 연구결과들을 근거로 생각해 볼 때, 성인초기에 해당되는 대학생들의 죽음에 노출된 경험이 그들에게 어떠한 영향을 주고 그들은 그 경험을 어떤 방식으로 정리하고 있는지를 알아보는 것은 대학생들에 대한 인성교육, 특히 죽음 교육 혹은 죽음준비교육 프로그램을 준비하는 데 의미있는 도움을 제공할 것으로 보인다. 본 연구에서는 죽음 교육의 대상으로 보여지는 대인조력 전공분야에 속하는 간호학과, 교육학과, 사회복지학과 학생들 17명을 대상으로 '합의에 의한 질적분석(CQR)' 방법으로 이들의 죽음 경험의 교육적 의미와 죽음 교육이 향후 그들이 직업현장에 진출하였을 때 어떤 도움이 될 것인지에 대한 생각을 분석하였다. 대인조력 전공분야 대학생들은 주변에서 죽음을 목격한 직후 충격(5명), 슬픔(7명), 허무감(3명) 등 부정적인 정서를 경험하게 된 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 이들은 죽음 경험 이후, 현재 삶이 중요하다는 사실을 인식(9명)하게 되었거나 죽음을 준비하는 삶이 필요함을 인식(4명)하게 되었으며, 죽음에 대한 교육의 필요성에 대해 죽음에 대한 교육이 충실한 삶(7명), 보람된 삶(6명), 완성하는 삶(5명) 등 삶을 보다 성숙되고 만족스러운 것으로 만드는 데 기여할 것이라고 보고하였다. 죽음 교육은 이후 이들이 직업현장에서 만나게 되는 자신이나 주변사람의 죽음을 만나게 되는 이들에게 삶을 보다 적극적이고 긍정적으로 살아가도록 조력(7명)하거나 죽음을 중립적 혹은 긍정적으로 수용할 수 있도록 조언(4명)할 수 있게 하고, 대처를 위한 조언과 조력(3명)을 할 수 있게 하며 인간존중 및 공감의 방식으로 접근하는 데(3명) 도움이 될 것으로 기대하였다. 마지막으로 연구의 의의 및 한계와 추후연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다.

Abstract

The authors conducted interviews with 17 high-touch major students about effects of significant other's death through CQR. A qualitative analysis revealed that all students experienced negative feelings(typical; sad, variant; shocked) when significant other was died. But All students learned meanings of current or future life(typical; importance of life, variant; need of preparing death). They thought death education would contributed to fulfilled(typical), altruistic(typical), fruitful or mature(variant) life for themselves, and helping people live positive and active life(typical), acceptance of death(variant), dealing and coping with death(variant). Critical analysis of previous studies and recommendations for future study were discussed.
