조기유학 청소년과 국내 재학 청소년의 일상생활 스트레스 비교

이 연구는 문화 배경이 다른 사회에서 학업을 수행하는 조기유학 청소년과 국내 재학 청소년들의 심리사회적 적응을 일상생활 스트레스를 중심으로 비교하기 위해 미국, 캐나다, 호주와 뉴질랜드, 중국, 동남아 등에서 유학중인 중･고등학생 402명과 국내 재학 청소년 3,125명의 자료를 통계 분석한 것으로 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조기유학 청소년들과 국내 재학 청소년들의 일상생활 스트레스 수준은 보통 수준으로 그리 높지 않았고, 국내 재학 청소년들이 조기유학생들에 비해 더 높은 스트레스 수준을 보였다. 둘째, 스트레스의 하위 영역별로 두 집단의 청소년들은 학업과 관련하여 가장 큰 부담을 가지고 있었다. 셋째, 스트레스 하위 영역 중 외모와 경제 관련 부분에서 여학생이 남학생보다 더 높은 스트레스를 경험하였다. 국내 재학 학생들의 경우는 여학생의 스트레스 수준이 남학생의 수준보다 전반적으로 더 높았다. 넷째, 두 집단의 청소년 모두에서 남학생이 여학생보다 우리 사회의 보편적 성역할에 동의하는 수준이 높았다. 다섯째, 일상생활 스트레스는 청소년의 심리적 적응을 예측하게 하는 요인으로 밝혀졌다.
Abstract
By comparing the level of daily stress between early study abroad adolescents (ESA) and adolescents in South Korea (ASK), this study aimed to explain their psychosocial adaptation in different socio-cultural backgrounds. Survey data were collected from 402 ESAs in North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, and East Asian countries, and 3,125 ASKs. Five main findings emerged. First, both ASKs and ESAs reported low levels of daily stress, while ASKs reported a higher level of general stress compared to ESAs. Second, both groups experienced the highest level of stress from school work. Third, female adolescents in Korea were more stressed compared to their male counterparts. Among ESAs, girls were more concerned with their physical features and financial situations than boys. Fourth, male adolescents both abroad and in Korea endorsed traditional gender role ideology more strongly than the female adolescents. Fifth, daily stress was the strongest predictor of adolescents' psychological adaptation.
