Abstract

This paper presents system for detection and hyperthermia of cancer using microwave impedance tuners. The broadband complex permittivity of cancer forms a striking contrast with that of normal tissue, thus can be used to diagnose cancer. We did analysis on multi-state reflectometer and propose a multi-state reflectometer with impedance tuner for broadband complex permittivity measurements. In order to verify the proposed system, we measured the complex permittivity of 0.9% saline using the proposed system. The measured results agreed well with the expected value of the Cole-Cole equation from 0.5GHz to 25GHz, clearly signify the aptness of the system for detection of cancer. In addition, an impedance tuner can increase the efficiency of hyperthermia for cancer treatment. For performance enhancement of these applications, low-loss MEMS impedance tuners with wide tuning range are presented.
