한국 인성교육의 현황과 향후 방향에 대한 질적 연구: 성격발달이론과 긍정심리학 관점을 중심으로

초록

인성교육에 대한 많은 관심과 노력에도 불구하고, 아직까지 인성의 정의와 이론은 충분한 합의를 보지 못하고 있다. 또한, 많은 인성교육이 주입식 방법으로 당위적 차원의 이야기를 전달한다는 점에서 실제적인 교육효과에 대해서는 여러 의구심의 목소리들이 높아지고 있다. 본 연구자들은 이러한 기존 인성교육이 당면한 여러 가지 문제점을 인식함으로써 우선적으로는 인성의 이론적 배경을 성격 발달과 긍정심리학의 성격강점 및 덕목의 관점에서 정리하고, 인성교육에 대한 교육대상자들의 인식과 태도 및 앞으로의 발전 방향성에 대한 이야기를 현장의 목소리로 담고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 중학생부터 성인에 이르기까지 41명의 연구 참여자들에게 과거 경험했던 인성교육, 현재 인성교육에 대한 긍정 혹은 부정 태도와 그 이유, 앞으로 인성교육의 방향성에 대하여 반 구조화된 형태로 질문한 후 응답의 빈도를 기준으로 내용을 분석하여 범주화하였다. 결과, 참여자들은 인성교육의 목적과 필요성에는 공감하면서도, 인성교육의 효과성에 대해서는 다소 회의적인 입장을 취하고 있었는데 그 이유는 주입식 방법, 현실과 괴리가 있는 진부한 도덕적 내용, 열악한 교육환경 등이 주요한 응답이었다. 향후 인성교육은 학교에 머무르기 보다는 성인을 포함한 전 생애 발달의 관점에서 이루어져야 할 필요성이 있으며, 단순히 도덕적인 주제보다는 한 인간으로서 자기를 실현해 가는 성숙한 존재로 발달할 수 있도록 돕는 심리·사회적 통합교육으로의 발전방향성을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 인성을 설명할 수 있는 객관적 근거로서 이론적 배경을 정리하고, 학교 현장을 벗어나 다양한 목소리를 담아 향후 발전방향을 제시했다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.

Abstract

Purpose: Based on theoretical understanding of character in terms of personality development and character strength and virtues, the present study aims to investigate the status quo of character education taking place in the fields. Finally, given these findings, the future direction of development was presented. Methodology: Forty-one participants ranging from middle school students to adults were asked in the form of a semi-structured interview to describe their experiences of character education, their positive or negative attitude towards that and reasons for it, and their opinion on the future directions of character education. Their responses were analyzed and interpreted through content analysis. Results: Participants shared with purpose and necessity of character education, but were skeptical about its effectiveness. Among the main reasons they listed for that were the cramming method of teaching, big distance from reality, and poor educational environment. Participants wanted future character education to be diverse across age groups in perspective on life-span human development. They expected this education to deal with psychologically and socially integrated human development instead of sticking to the subject of morality. Finally, they suggested that character education needs to go beyond school settings and try to enhance individuals both psychologically and socially to form more mature personality. Value: This study is meaningful in that it provides a theoretical background of and future direction in character education. This study is expected to help people responsible for character education understand what character is like and what character education ought to teach.
