성리학의 마음교육 이해와 현대 공교육에의 시사

Abstract

This paper is to propose that it is important to succeed the tradition of 'maum education', especially that of orthodox neo-confucianism, for improvement of korean public education. In the history of korean education on the base of Confucianism or Buddhism, the tradition of maum education had been the core of educational practice. But in the process of modernization of korean education since the latter half of 19th century, the educational tradition of maum education has become extinct. Instead, the instrumental viewpoint about education that regard the education as the mere means of individual or national survival has been spread out. As a result, the korean public education has failed in the field of intellectual education as well as in moral education. The one way to solve these problems is to activate the tradition of maum education. Especially, the maum education in the orthodox neo-confucianism, which is characterized by the methodology of kung-fu (工夫) that ching(敬)(or hsing(行)) run parallel with ke-wu chih-chih(格物致知)(or chih(知)), has good points that can satisfy the many requests of the korean public education in the future.
