교직은 다른 직업과 한편으로는 유사하고 다른 한편으로는 구분되는 특성과 도전을 지니고 있다. 예비교사들이 어떤 특성과 도전에 이끌려 교직을 선택하게 되는가를 탐색하는 연구는 교직 적성과 능력을 가진 인재를 교직으로 유인, 선발하고, 직무 만족감과 헌신도를 높이는 정책 개발을 위해 필요하다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제인식에서 출발하여 우리나라 중등 교원양성기관에서 수학교육을 전공하는 예비교사들을 대상으로 그들의 교직 희망 동기가 무엇인지를 분석하는 한편, 다양한 동기를 일관성 있는 몇 개의 범주로 구분하여 핵심 요인을 추출할 목적으로 수행되었다. 미국 미시간주립대학교 연구팀이 개발한 교사교육 예비조사 도구를 활용하여 설문조사를 실시하였고, 결과 분석을 위해서 기초 통계 분석 및 요인 분석 방법이 사용되었다.분석 결과, 예비교사들은 교직만이 제공할 수 있는 특별한 동기에 가장 강하게 반응하였으나, 보수나 직업 안정성 등 외재적 동기도 중요한 교직 희망 요인으로 작용하였다. 2단계에 걸친 요인 분석 결과, 수학이라는 학문 선호, 근무 여건과 안정적 수입, 학교와 가르침 선호, 학생과 사회의 변화 추구, 교원자격의 이차적 혜택 등, 총 5개의 요인이 추출되었다. 이러한 결과를 타 직업 선택 동기와 비교분석하는 한편, 유능한 인재의 교직 진출을 활성화하고 직무 만족도를 높일 수 있는 여건 마련에 시사점을 줄 수 있는 몇 가지 정책 제언이 제시되었다.
Abstract
Choosing Mathematics Teaching as a Career: An Analysis of Prospective Teachers' Reasons to Become TeachersKim, Eegyeong(Korean Educational Development Institute)Han, Shinil(Sungkyunkwan University)Teaching profession is characterized with those features that can be found in other professions, while its unique characteristics and challenges, more often than not, distinguish its attractiveness from other professions. It is important to identify major reasons by which prospective teachers are attracted to teaching positions, as they provide implications for policy development aiming at screening effective pre-service teachers as well as enhancing satisfaction level of in-service teachers.This study examined the reasons of pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in secondary teacher training institutions for their career choice. In order to analyze major reasons to become teachers and classify them into major categories, a total of 209 students completed a questionnaire developed by Michigan State University research team, in which they were asked to rate the importance of 30 factors in influencing their choice of teaching as a career. Data analysis showed that not only intrinsic reasons but also altruistic and extrinsic reasons played important roles in making decisions to become secondary mathematics teachers. Factor analysis revealed five categories of reasons including preference towards mathematics, working conditions and pay, love of teaching pupils, seeking changes of pupils and society, and other benefits given by teaching certificate. A few policy recommendations were made to make the teaching career more an attractive choice for those who possess talents and ability to become effective teachers.
