Abstract
Designing Accessible Web-based Instruction(WBI) for Students with Visual/Hearing ImpairmentsRoh, Seakzoon (Sungshin Women's University)The purposes of this study were 1) to know the concept of Web accessibility and its international trends, 2) to identify the Web accessibility issues students with disabilities had experienced, and 3) to help Web-based instructors to design and develop accessible Web-based instruction(WBI) for students with various needs and features by providing effective instructional design guidelines. To identify Web accessibility issues students with visual/hearing impairments had experienced and those effective instructional design guidelines to solve the issues, Web accessibility evaluation of the WBI courses eight students with visual/hearing impairments at a mid-western university took by using LIFT Online, demonstration/ observation, and individual interviews were also conducted. The results showed that students with visual impairments had confronted various Web accessibility issues such as no or inappropriate provision of alternative text for non-text components, inappropriate usage of FRAME, screen and contents where visuals were overly used, etc., and that students with hearing impairments had also experienced several issues such as no or inappropriate provision of synchronized captions, overly used colors, low quality and unclear audio/video clips, etc. Participants suggested several effective instructional design guidelines such as simple, clear, and understandable alternative text, no use of FRAME, minimizing the size of audio/video clips, etc. Other identified issues and suggested instructional design guidelines were also presented by the type of disability and Web accessibility guidelines.
