Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop and examine the effect of parents’ training programs for bullies and victims of school violence. The programs were developed by following procedure. First, in the design phase, the program goal was established to prevent a recurrence of school violence, and a literature review was conducted. In addition, the data were collected from a claim inquiry of youth counselors and youth experts, focus group interviews of youth counselors, and in-depth interviews of parents of school violence bullies and victims. Second, the principles of programs were developed, and the draft program was also developed. The main principles of the programs consisted of parents’ roles: aiding of children's development, advocating children's right(for parents of victims), facilitating rational problem-solving(for parents of bullies), and developing parents' own growth. Third, the implementation/evaluation phase consisted of a test operation of the program, evaluation of its effectiveness, and supplementation of the program according to the evaluation. The programs were composed in 6 sessions each. The programs were tested with 25 of bullies’ parents, and 18 of victims’ parents. The result of pre-post tests shows that the program for bullies’ parents improved sense of competence of parenting. And the result also reveals that the program for victims’ parents improved sense of competence of parenting, parent-child communication, and parental behavior. Counselors, as well as participants, all reported great satisfaction. Implications of the results and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
