대학 전공교육과정 개편과정의 문제점에 대한 근거이론적 분석

이 연구는 근거이론을 적용하여 대학에서의 전공교육과정 개편과정과 그 속에 내재된 문제점에 대한 실체이론을 구축하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 연구결과, 전공교육과정 개편은 교수들의 관심과 숙의를 통한 집단적 합의를 통해 이루어지보다 무관심, 갈등, 임기응변적 대응 속에서 주먹구구식으로 이루어지고 있었다. 전공교육과정 개편은 학과장의 문서작업으로 간주되고 있고, 형식적이고 피상적인 수준의 교육과정 개편이 만연해있으며, 급격한 사회변화에도 불구하고 기존의 교육과정이 유지 운영되고 있었다. 그 결과, 각 교과목 수업은 전공교육과정을 중심으로 통합적으로 운영되기보다 개별 교수자의 관심과 관점에 따라 독자적으로 운영되고 있고, 교수들의 전공영토주의로 인해 교육과정은 시대적 요구와 학생들의 요구를 제대로 수용하지 못하고 있었다. 이와 같은 연구결과는 대학에서의 교육과정 개편 및 운영에 대한 관심이 필요하고, 교육과정을 개편과 운영을 지원해줄 수 있는 체제를 구축할 필요가 있으며, 교수들의 교육활동을 지원하고 격려해줄 수 있는 지원체제가 필요함을 시사한다.
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the problems and issues in academic planning and curriculum development at the university level. Design/Methodology/Data/Approach: A grounded theory study into the experiences of faculty members was undertaken to develop theory about the curriculum development process at the university. Findings/Results: The results show that curriculum is developed and implemented in virtue of the rule of thumb that faculty members make judgements and decisions without deliberation. The curriculum tends to be revised at the formal and passive level, to be merely recognized as paperwork, and to be maintained at the current level. This paper also identifies obstacles to the deliberative process of curriculum development: greater emphasis on research compared to teaching within the contemporary higher education system, the lack of support system for quality curriculum, conservatism and individualism, the lack of communication and collaboration, workload, etc. This paper explores ways to initiate critical curriculum conversations in support of curriculum development and implementation.
