Abstract
Like other forms of intangible heritage, traditional musiccultures have been adversely affected by the majoreconomic, social, and technological shifts of recentdecades. The resultant changes in musical contexts, function, prestige, and modes of transmission havejeopardised the vitality and viability of many musicalgenres. Efforts to actively support the sustainability ofendangered music heritage are developing, often in thecontext of the emerging field of ‘applied ethno-musicology’. The more established field of language maintenance hasconceptual, theoretical, and pragmatic parallels withsafeguarding music, and these synergies are arguably ofgreat importance to the swift development of effectivemechanisms for supporting viable and vibrant musiccultures. This paper identifies areas where themaintenance of a language holds the potential to informpathways towards sustaining endangered musical heritage, and explores one of them in depth – the tension betweendocumenting endangered languages and attempting torevitalise them.
