Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the moderated mediation effect of empathy through self-focused attention on the relationship between emotional contagion and prosocial behaviors among adolescents. For this, we conducted an online survey with 300 adolescents and assessed emotional contagion, self-focused attention, empathy, and prosocial behaviors. The results were as follows. First, empathy mediated the association between emotional contagion and prosocial behaviors. Second, self-focused attention moderated the relationship between emotional contagion and empathy. Third, the moderated mediation effect of empathy through self-focused attention on the relationship between emotional contagion and prosocial behaviors was significant. These findings indicate that as self-focused attention increases, the positive impact of emotional contagion on empathy decreases. Findings further suggest that focusing on self-immersion and empathy that are modifiable traits can work better than on less adaptable affective contagion when intervening to enhance adolescents' prosocial behaviors. Based on these findings, we discussed limitations and implications of the study, along with suggestions for future research.
