Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the structural relationships among adolescents' social withdrawal, smartphone dependence, and depression over time to better understand the underlying characteristics of these variables. To achieve this, data from the 3rd year (2020, 9th grade) to the 6th year (2023, 12th grade) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS 2018) were utilized (N=1,963). Analyses were conducted using an autoregressive cross-lagged (ARCL) model with SPSS 30.0 and AMOS 30.0. The findings are as follows. First, all three variables exhibited autoregressive effects over time, indicating stable patterns of continuity. Second, social withdrawal at an earlier time point had a significant positive effect on depression at a later time point but did not significantly affect smartphone dependence. Third, smartphone dependence at an earlier time point had a significant positive effect on both social withdrawal and depression at later time points. Fourth, depression at an earlier time point had a significant negative effect on both social withdrawal and smartphone dependence at later time points. Lastly, in the longitudinal relationship in which smartphone dependence predicted depression, social withdrawal was found to have a significant mediating effect. These results provide a theoretical foundation for predicting and effectively intervening in adolescents' social isolation and reclusive behaviors. The implications of these findings, study limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
