농업 유산은 농경과 작물 생산에 관련된 관습, 신념, 가치관을 포괄하며, 이러한 요소들은 모두 직접 경험과 기타 비공식적 수단을 통해 대대로 이어져 온 것이다. 본 논문은 돌담(파릴, paril)을 활용하여 토양과 용수를 보존하는 계단식 농업 유형을 중점적으로 다룬다. 이러한 농업 유형은 필리핀 세부(Cebu)에 위치한 유명한 유산 마을 아르가오(Argao)의 고지대 바랑가이(barangay)에서 전통적으로 수행된다. 본 논문은 이러한 농업 유산과 관련 의식, 신념, 전설의 다양한 측면을 검토한다. 돌담의 축조와 보수를 위한 지식, 그리고 전설에 바탕을 둔 의식의 연행과 그 의미는 이러한 농업 유산의 무형적 측면을 보여준다.
Abstract
Agricultural heritage encompasses practices, beliefs and values related to farming and crop production passed on from generation to generation through direct experience and other informal means. This paper focuses on a type of terrace farming which uses stone walls ( paril ) to conserve soil and water, and is traditionally practised in the upland barangay s of Argao, a well-known heritage town in Cebu, the Philippines. It examines various aspects of this agricultural heritage and its associated rituals, beliefs and legends. The knowledge of building and repairing the stone walls, as well as the performance and meanings of rituals embedded in legends, demonstrate the intangible aspects of this built agricultural heritage.
