Abstract
The present study examined the dynamic interplay between peer rejection and friendship networks in early adolescence, with particular attention to the role of peer rejection in the formation and maintenance of friendships. Participants were 882 fifth- and sixth-grade students (48% girls) from 35 elementary school classrooms in a metropolitan area of South Korea. Peer rejection and friendship networks were assessed at two time points (spring and fall semester) using peer nomination procedures. Longitudinal social network analysis (SIENA) was employed to investigat epeer selection and peer influence processes. The findings indicated that early adolescents tended to maintain friendships with peers who were similar in their levels of peer rejection. Evidence of peer influence also emerged, such that friends' levels of peer rejection became increasingly similar over time. These results highlight the mediating role of peer networks in both the persistence and change of peer rejection during early adolescence and underscore the importance of peer-ecology-based classroom management. The results suggest that teachers' guidance and preventive strategies are crucial for fostering healthy peer communities in school settings.
