일제강점기 제주 독립운동의 지형과 독립유공자 현황 분석

Abstract

This study has contemplated the geographical features of Jeju Island independence movement in the category of Korea’s racial movement and examine the connotative meaning of Jeju Island independence movement. Jeju Island has been researched by local scholars due to the geographical characteristics of being away from the mainland. Historically, Jeju Island had been strategic and industrial key point as a place of exchange for outside influence. Also, the product value and marketability of Jeju Island’s marine products have been recognized since around the year 1900. The emergence of marine products could grow as one category of anti-Japanese movement by being connected with the increased labor value of Jeju Island’s female divers. Although the geographical activity phase of Jeju Island does not represent the characteristics of mainland or lean toward such trend, it has been viewed as having necessity to approach from more macroscopic perspective considering its geographical location in Northeast Asia and the regionality of Jeju Island. While the activity phase of independence movement has been analyzed based on the status of independence meritorious men in Jeju Island, the candidates were getting recognized in 8 sectors including from patriotic soldier movement to student movement and patriotic enlightenment movement, etc. Especially, while Jeju Island region had many candidates for the recognition of activities toward the direction of Japan, it is determined that the geographical proximity and the change of times had impact on getting spread as anti-Japanese national salvation activity. Specifically, the independence meritorious men had identified the characteristics of Jeju Island independence movement based on the analysis of status by level of merit, status by series of movement, recognition period of candidates and the characteristics by activity sector, etc. Looking based on the research seen as above, the Jeju Island independence movement at this time requires attempt of multilateral research where the characteristics of independence movement representing the regional characteristics can be highlighted while harboring the tasks such as additional research and discovery of independence meritorious men or highlight of regional characteristics.
