경찰 조직문화와 감정조절능력을 고려한 경찰 스트레스(PTSD)와 자살생각 간의 관계

최근 우리나라에서 자살로 사망하는 경찰관이 한 해 평균 20명인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 같은 기간 공무상 순직 사망하는 경찰관 수 15명보다 많은 수치이다. 경찰 본연의 업무수행으로 사망하는경찰관보다 PDSD(외상 후 스트레스)로 자신의 목숨을 끊는 경찰관이 더 많아 경찰관이 겪는 정신적 고통과 스트레스가 매우 심각한 상황이다. 이에 이 연구에서는 2018년에 우리나라 경찰관 118명을 대상으로 직접 설문을 실시하여 스트레스 정도와 감정조절능력, 경찰문화 및 자살생각과의 관련성을 검토해 보았다. 구조화된 설문문항을 바탕으로 외상 후 스트레스가 자살시도 생각에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 살펴보는데 초점을 두었고, 특히 위계적 특성의 경찰문화와 경찰관이 개개인이 갖고 있는 감정조절능력이 각각 자살생각에 어느 정도로 심각한 영향을 미치는지 로지스틱 회귀분석 모델을 통해 체계적으로 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 경찰관의 자살생각에 외상 후 스트레스가 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로나타났다. 추가로 성별(여성), 연령(20대), 조직문화(-), 감정조절능력(+)도 경찰관의 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 다른 변인들을 모두 통제했을 때 조직문화가 부정적이라고 느끼는경찰일수록 더 자살생각을 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 감정조절능력이 좋은 경찰관일수록 더자살생각을 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 정리하면, 향후 위계적인 침묵코드 문화를 타파하는 새로운경찰 조직문화 정착이 시급한 것으로 나타났고, 경찰관 개인의 감정조절능력 측정 및 조작적 정의와관련된 심도 있는 추가 연구가 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 이하 분석 결과와 관련된 해석을 결론 부분에서 상세히 다루도록 한다.
Abstract
This study aims at identifying important factors that are related with suicidal thoughts of police in South Korea. It is estimated that approximately twenty policemen have committed suicide during a year due to the symptoms of depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Numerous studies have showed that policemen are more vulnerable with the serious stress works and traumatic experiences than regular workers of private sectors. Few studies have been conducted to investigate the associations between the PTSD and suicidal thought by considering the effect of individuals’ capacity to balance emotion and hierarchial police subculture. The present study conducted survey toward 118 policemen for collecting the data of stress level, ability to control negative emotion, isolated police subculture, and suicidal thought. This survey was implemented in police stations of Seoul in June, 2018. Logistic regression was used to examine the key factors which was associated with suicidal thought of policemen. The result demonstrated that age, gender, ability to control emotion, and police subculture are statistically significant factors that are related to suicidal thought of police, when other variables are constant. Specifically, the desirable capacity to balance negative emotion of policemen is more likely to increase the odds of having suicidal thought, which is opposite to common expectation. Further police implications will be discussed.
