Abstract
Recently, the relationship between media coverage and the perception of crime and police have been highlighted in Western societies. This study aims to test media-type-related effects on perceptions of crime and police in South Korea. Especially, this study focused on the effect of media type and generation on fear of crime and police legitimacy. A sample of 537 respondents from South Korea was surveyed. Multiple Hierarchical Regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between media consumption and fear of crime and police legitimacy. Regression analyses were conducted separately for the MZ generation and the older generation. In the MZ generation, a positive relationship existed between new media consumption and the perception of police legitimacy. Conversely, in the older generation, consumption of legacy media was positively associated with the perception of police legitimacy. These findings indicate the media factors influencing the enhancement of police legitimacy differ depending on the generation. Before this study, there has been no exploration of the relationship between media consumption and police legitimacy focusing on media types. The findings of this study indicate the importance of investigating the relationship between media consumption and police legitimacy while considering media types and generation effects.
