Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find ways to improve the independence movement information system. Specifically, in this article, the “Korean Independence Movement Information System,” “Domestic Independence Movement and National Protection Historic Site,” “Foreign Independence Movement Historic Site,” and “Korean Independence Movement Dictionary” operated by the Independence Hall of Korea were studied. Each system provides users with information in each field, such as ‘real data’ and ‘research results’, ‘place of independence movement’, and ‘independence movement figures’. However, the search for knowledge about the independence movement can be made through the process of synthesizing and organizing information in each field and finding its historical context. Currently, the information system on the independence movement does not implement an interconnection that can be expanded to related information through knowledge elements in each field. Therefore, in this study, we would like to propose the establishment of an “independence movement digital archive” as a digital space where knowledge about the independence movement can be explored, and specific implementation strategies are as follows. First, the independence movement digital archive needs to be configured ‘multi-layered’ to implement complex functions. Accordingly, the detailed system of the independent movement digital archive was structured into a logical layer of Archive Layer, Semantic Data Layer, and Curation Layer according to the purpose and function of the system. Second, in order to realize the interconnection of knowledge about the independence movement, an ontology-based semantic database was used to establish a ‘relationship network of independence movement knowledge’. As an example, Lee Dong-hwi presented the letter data sent to Ahn Chang-ho. This network of knowledge is an attempt to convert knowledge related to the independence movement, which has traditionally been an object of “reading” and understanding, into an object of “seeing” and feeling. Third, it is necessary to establish ‘data curation content’ for storytelling of independence movement data. Through curation content, information users can explore information on various topics in accordance with their interests, and furthermore, they can curate themselves as subjects who design the context of the data. The implementation of the independence movement digital archive presented above is difficult to implement in terms of function modification or supplementation for individual systems currently operated by the Independence Hall. Rather, the sharing of new perceptions of the purpose and role of digital archives should precede. This study was designed to newly establish a perception of the role and direction of the independent movement information system in this sense of problem.
