Abstract

This study analyzes Month of Veteran Support posters from the military regime era to examine how state ideology was visually represented and reproduced through commemorative media. It explores how the veteran support system functioned beyond welfare policy as a governing mechanism shaping national identity and social order, with a focus on its linguistic and visual strategies. In the early 1960s, posters featured bereaved families of soldiers and police officers, as well as the National Cemetery, both honoring war sacrifices and reinforcing state authority and anti-communist rhetoric. In the late 1960s, by linking Vietnam War participation to the dedication and victories of soldiers, these posters delivered messages aimed at mobilizing public support. During the 1970s, the sacrifices of national meritorious individuals were connected to the country’s modernization narrative, visually constructing a “progressive” self-image of the state. Using symbolic motifs such as laurel wreaths, incense burners, and doves, these posters emphasized the continuity from past sacrifices to present national prosperity and reconfigured the families of the fallen from mere beneficiaries into proactive agents of self-reliance. In the early 1980s, the posters depicted veterans as “national heroes” who safeguarded national security, underscoring collective mourning and patriotic actions to foster internalized patriotism. Overall, the “Month of Veteran Support” posters served as symbolic media that succinctly embodied the state ideology and identity pursued by the military regime within each distinct historical context.
