Abstract

The June 10th National Movement of 1926, recognized as one of the three major independence movements against Japan’s oppressive rule, has not received the attention it deserves despite its historical significance. While its scale does not match that of the 3·1 Movement, its meaning and impact are equally important. Research since the 1990s has revealed that the June 10th National Movement was not merely a student-driven event but a pioneering activity of a national united front, where socialists and nationalists joined forces to open a new chapter in the independence movement. The movement’s original nationwide plan, led by key figures such as Kwon Oh Sul of the Korean Communist Party, was thwarted when its leaders were arrested by Japanese police. Despite these arrests, the June 10th National Movement was independently carried out in Seoul by the Chosen Student Society For Science Study in collaboration with the Tongdonggye, fulfilling their pre-assigned role in the broader plan. Alarmed by the potential repercussions of the movement, the Japanese authorities deliberately separated the two incidents and downplayed the students’ involvement in the National Movement. The Chosen Student Society For Science Study’s ability to proceed with the movement, even after the nationwide plan was derailed, owed much to the active participation of Chosen Christian College students. Their engagement stemmed from a vibrant student movement at Chosen Christian College, characterized by the formation and operation of a popular student council. However, not all Chosen Christian College students who participated in the June 10th National Movement can be classified as socialists. Rather, they believed that unity among the Korean people, transcending social and political ideologies, was vital for achieving independence and liberation. They saw the death of Emperor Sunjong as an opportunity to spark the National Movement and spread this message widely. The reason the June 10th National Movement has not been properly recognized despite its significance is that Japanese efforts to suppress the atmosphere of a national united front during the colonial era have yet to be fully overcome due to the ideological divisions in Korean society that persisted after liberation, through the division of the peninsula and the Korean War. The evaluation of socialist ideologies and socialist-led independence movements during the Japanese colonial era, based solely on post-liberation perspectives, requires reconsideration.
