Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In recent years, Korea has been experiencing rapid demographic changes owing to a low birthrate and an aging population. Aging in place has emerged as an ideal solution to solve this problem. Accordingly, housing modification that can compensate for the decline in physical function of the elderly by reducing environmental press level is essential. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of aging-friendly customized home modifications on residents' life and life satisfaction three months after customized home modification, focusing on the household type living with their families. The findings are expected to provide an insight into the impact of customized home modification on elder residents’ lives under the circumstance of both quantitative and qualitative research. (Method) Three households where the elderly have been living with brothers, sons and grandchildren, and spouses, respectively, in old houses for more than 20 years were selected. These houses were actually modified according to the consensused customized plan respecting residents’ needs within the limited budgets provided. The study was conducted through field observations and in-depth interviews. (Results) All three subjects had chronic diseases without officially known disabilities. Modification plans were made uniquely to each house based on housing conditions and residents’ situations and needs differences. There were differences in modification according to the current condition and limited budgets among the three houses. A list of questionnaires to measure satisfaction after living for three months after completion of the housing renovation was also developed in relation to the modified features. The results showed that all target households were satisfied with the results of the home modification, not only safety, comfort, and convenience to use, behaviorally, but also increased perception on autonomous control of their living space and on expectation of staying in their residences psychologically. (Conclusions) This study showed empirical evidence that aging-friendly customized home modification is cost-effective in two ways. One is by contributing to the improvement of the life quality of vulnerable residents and the other is possibly in delaying and preventing admission to nursing facilities, having economic effect on reducing the burden of the nation. This study is significant at a time when Korea is facing population aging risk especially housing welfare crisis with limited research on home modifications for the vulnerable population living in diverse situations. Thereby, this study can provide insights to understand the real situation and realistic approach for future direction. While the population is rapidly aging, it also reveals diversity in elderly households. Therefore, further studies on diverse types of elderly households and houses need to be explored to form the basis for future policy and research.
