Abstract

(Background and Purpose)Mega sports complexes, which occupy tremendously big spaces in the city, lose their efficiency as public spaces, not only because they are seldom used for sports games but also because from the beginning, their main function is to maintain the symbolic value of a stadium and the efficiency of managing such as complex. Therefore, intensifying the public use of these under used outdoor spaces is an urgent matter. (Method) This article makes a theoretical consideration of a mega sports complex and its under used space. It then makes an appraisal index of public use, along with a definition of the public use of a mega sports complex. Lastly, it applies the index analytically to the mega sports complex. (Result)The activation of mega sports complexes as part of the urban community, like urban squares, is crucial, as is recovering their value to the public by increasing their usability. This can be achieved by improving their accessibility, openness, amenities, and connectivity with the city. In addition, when a city is in plans to build a mega sports complex, it should consider gathering public opinion by consulting the residents of the nearby commercial area.
