Abstract
(Background and Purpose) As the number of dilapidated facility spaces and idle spaces increased due to the rapid changes in modern society, the need for design that gives new cultural value to those spaces has risen. hence, space regenerative design became active world wide. In terms of space context, this study seeks to derive the spatial planning elements necessary to recycle idle space into the hospitality industry through case analysis of Amsterdam’s hotels, which are successful examples of re designing the accommodation facilities using historical spaces. Amsterdam is a city with a good regenerative design. Amsterdam was a global trading hub in 17th century, but failed industrial transformation, resulting in an increase of empty buildings and spaces. However, since 1970, Amsterdam conducted both construction policy of public rental housing and the preservation policy of historical spaces in order to secure both modern and traditional elements. This has served as a driving force to maintain the atmosphere of today's Amsterdam and also gave a certain contribution to its hospitality industry. (Method) Among the Amsterdam hotel designs using idle space, places where spatial characteristics are strongly linked to cultural characteristics that are embodied in historical contexts were selected for analysis. As a research method, first, the historical elements of the selected buildings are analyzed. Second, the method of utilizing and preserving historical elements is analyzed. Each design is evaluated with two properties, formal properties(historicality, preservation, artistry) and semantic properties(placeness, diversity and persistence). In conclusion, the impact of regenerative design on urban regenerating is reviewed considering the relationship with its surroundings. (Results) According to the case analysis, Amsterdam's regenerative design was carried out by reinterpreting cultural diversity based on historicality of the space. Such regenerative design contributed significantly to the local hospitality industry. The embrace of diversity based on the historicality of the space provided a design that would give experience-oriented satisfaction to visitors, thus ensuring sustainable economic feasibility by attracting tourists. (Conclusions) Through the analysis, This study suggests that the problems of aged buildings and idle spaces should be solved through community-centered re-design. It also emphasizes that the re-design should be able to fully utilize the context of the space to create a platform for a new lifestyle in which historical memories of the place can lead to the visitor's experience. This study presents the direction of sustainable hospitality industry, and is a preliminary study of design aspects for vitalization of hospitality industry.
