Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In the present era, hotels represent commercial spaces and are embodiments of lifestyle. The main customer base of hotels, over 65%, consists of the MZ generation, who prioritize designs that realize ecological sustainability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to move beyond the micro perspective of simply using recycled materials and, through the analysis of advanced overseas cases, to study ecological sustainability from a macro perspective, including space design and operational systems. Through this, the study aims to propose a breakthrough for the stagnant domestic hotel market in the low-growth era, realize and transmit ecological sustainability, and seek thoughts and measures to establish the identity of ecological sustainability by presenting the direction of circularity from the planning stage to maintenance in hotel design. (Method) This study analyzes five cases of medium-sized hotels, established after 2015, that can accommodate more than 200 people and clearly exhibit characteristics of ecological sustainability. First, through a literature review on hotel spaces and ecologically sustainable spaces, the definitions and types of hotel spaces and ecological sustainability are identified, and an analysis framework for studying space characteristics is derived. Through this, the spatial characteristics of ecological sustainability in overseas hotel spaces are analyzed to draw final conclusions. (Results) In this study, overseas hotels were classified into front facilities, F&B facilities, and guest rooms. The direction of analysis was established by categorizing the spatial characteristics of ecological sustainability into eco-friendliness, economic efficiency, sociality, locality, and historicity. The results from the analysis of overseas hotel cases are as follows. Front facilities, F&B facilities, and guest rooms all showed locality, eco-friendliness, sociality, and economic efficiency in the order of historicity, with guest rooms also showing the highest historicity and economic efficiency and locality tied. (Conclusions) This study aimed to derive spatial characteristics from the perspective of ecological sustainability in overseas hotels. Front facilities showed the highest historicity, with a score of 4.8, by preserving and inheriting the local history to create value. Following this, the locality, which develops in cooperation with the local economy, was measured at 4.4 points. In F&B facilities, historicity and locality were tied at 4.4 points, the highest, followed by eco-friendliness, sociality, and economic efficiency. Guest rooms also showed the highest historicity, and as the most private space in the hotel, sociality was measured at 2.4 points, the lowest. Overall, historicity was above 4 points in all spaces. Following this, the locality was the second highest. Additionally, eco-friendliness through the use of renewable energy and recycling was realized in all spaces. This study is expected to be used as basic data for in-depth follow-up research and design planning of domestic hotel spaces considering the characteristics of ecological sustainability in the future.
